July Goals Recap + August Goals

This is going to be a bit embarrassing, most of these are fails.

1. Blog layout. —Semi CHECK. I still have some work to do but I did get a start.
2. Ride an early morning ride BEFORE work and bike commute to the office at the end of my ride.—FAIL. No excuses, just a fail.
3. Do a double day bike of 15-20 miles in the AM and 15-30 in the PM.—FAIL. No excuses, just a fail.
4. Have an awesome, laid back, summery birthday BBQ to celebrate my last year of my 20's and Mr. Pi's first year of his 30's.—CHECK. It was amazing. The only “fail” here is that I didn’t take any photos.
5. I had a goal to get my long run up to 10 miles but I'm going to pare that goal back a bit and set it at 7 since I'll be outta running commission for the first few days of the month and then easing back into the swing of things.—FAIL. Foot has really prevented me from doing much running.
6. Do AT least 2 early morning workouts per week.—FAIL. I did a good job of getting to spin class and I did get up early in California while on vacation for early morning workouts but in general, this is a fail.
7. Design BOTH the patio (or deck extension) and terrace. –Semi CHECK. We did design the patio more or less and have made a list of all the items we need to get done before we can even start the pavering process. In that case, designing and figuring out one project is a success. I think the terracing may be a 2012 project.

August 2011

Given the diagnosis of my foot, some of these are goals to ‘not’ do something.

1. Do a post on the patio project, including all of the to-do’s and ‘before’ photos of the yard. Catalogue the adventure via blog, I’m guessing it is probably a two-month project.

2. No running until August 20th. Yup, I’m officially NOT running for 4 weeks (starting last Friday). It’s necessary and I’ve accepted it. Doctor said two weeks but I’m self extending this to 4 weeks.

3. Since I’m trying to rest the foot, it’s time to whip the upper body into shape. Here I come weights and pushup challenge.

4. Complete some distance of the Covered Bridge Ride. I am signed up for the century but it’s doubtful I’ll be able to complete that distance, I’m leaning toward metric century or even the 40 mile family ride.

5. Order (or create) some artwork with Mr. Pi. He has been wanting to decorate our house a bit more. I’m personally a bit of a minimalist but I agree it could use some spicing up, especially the downstairs bathroom.

6. Complete a 2 mile swim. My swim distances have really varied swim-to-swim but I’ve done a few 3000 yd swims so I think it is well within reason to do a 2 mile (3525 yds). I’m not really going for a straight swim necessarily, though I may do that as well, but rather a swim workout of 2 miles. I’ve gone back to the book and have been loving the workouts.

7. Healthy eating focus. Since I won’t be spending a ton of time running and biking, I plan to use some of that time to get back into meal planning and cooking for the Pi’s.

8. Finish blog re-design.

The Good, The Bad, The Frustrating and The Future

The good= the foot is NOT broken! Yay!

The Bad = doctor said no weight bearing activities including but not limited to running, biking, excessive walking, dance, etc. I am supposed to stay off my foot as much as possible for two weeks, he said biking is okay next week but if it hurts STOP. After two weeks if the pain still isn’t better, it’s likely I’ll get another cortisone injection (cuz the last one helped so much—read sarcasm) and a lovely walking boot (it’s the newest fashion for august). I’m hoping two weeks of good rest will do the trick. I haven’t biked since my disaster ride last Friday so I’m already a week there and am not planning on riding, as much as it kills me not to, until next Thursday. My last run was over a week ago so at the end of two weeks, it’ll be three full weeks of not running. Furthermore, I’m also only supposed to wear running shoes with my new inserts, ice as much as I can and do my stretches up to 4 times a day. This means I’ll be sporting tennies with my work clothes (it’s a good look—read BARFalicious), stretching at my desk every 10 minutes and carrying multiple bags of ice from the kitchen during the day. However, it’s serious time now. My foot has been bothering me since mid-April and I’ve had enough. I’m willing to do whatever it takes! So, for the foreseeable future it’s all swimming all the time (and abs, pushups and any arm weights that I can do sitting down).

The Frustrating = Sunday was supposed to be my first Olympic triathlon. I downgraded last week to the Sprint Tri but I think even that is out at this point. Doc basically gave me a choice: 1) race half ass and injured risking further injury and a frustrating performance or 2) skip it, get healthy and totally kick butt at the next one. Okay, so the doc didn’t exactly say it in those terms but that was the basic gist. So, as annoying as this is I will be getting a bit fat DNS on Sunday.

The Future= I am not committing to any other races any time soon. I need to get healthy and build back my base before I’m ready to test it out. I have pretty much decided when I get the okay to start running again, I’m going to keep it nice and easy and build back REALLY slowly. I am also considering joining masters swimming again. Mr. Pi and I have been toying with this idea for the fall but I am pretty much 100% for it now since swimming seems to be the one constant that I can do despite injury. Before we join (I’m hoping Mr. Pi still wants to do it in the fall) I’ll be spending August swimming on my own, enjoying the last month of the outdoor pool, swimming with friends who are still training for tri’s in the open water and generally working my way back through my favorite swimming book.

Costumes, Rides and Birthdays!

This is what happens when life gets busy, I do all these fun things and I want to blog about them all and then I forget and everything piles up. So here is a shortened, bulleted list of three major shenanigans.

-July 16th, Pix annual Bastille Day Wine 5k (in costume)

I’ve never run in costume and I’ve never done a race where there were wine stops instead of water stops. Anyway, Mr. Pi and I threw together last minute costumes and met up with a couple of his friends, one of which ran with a sword (a real one) balanced on her head for 3.1 miles. Yes, wow! There were 10, yup 10 wine stops during the 5k. I skipped 3 of them as I just couldn’t stomach anymore alchie. It was a grand time and we plan to do it again next year and hopefully we can convince some other folks to go with us. We have on our dreams list to run the full Medoc Marathon in France in September 2012. Portland folks: registration for the 5k was FREE, you just had to bring 5 cans of food as a donation to the Oregon food bank, how many of y’all are in for next year?

Here we are.  Hula girl and shipwrecked businessman.

Other participants (including sword girl in the purple)

-July 22nd, epic, lesson-learning ride in the Gorge

So there is a lot to say here but I’ll keep it brief. Mr. Pi and I met up with Amy at her place and had set out to do 80-85 miles. The ride took us over bridges and along some nice back country roads. However, there were areas of highway riding that weren’t very pleasant and the second bridge crossing was over a grated bridge that was really WINDY. It was pretty but terrifying at the same time!
Bridge of the Gods---scary but pretty!

Along the Washougal River

The ride was also very hilly. To make a long story really short. I had to call for a ride at mile 63. My foot was really hurting (I think it may be the dreaded, stress fractures! Definitely more serious than morton’s neuroma) and honestly, I wasn’t prepared to ride that many hills on that long of a ride. Yup, I quit. I’ve never quit anything in my life before but it was miserable for me and even more so for my wonderfully understanding hubby. I owe Amy big time for driving all the way out to get me, she was seriously a life saver! Anyway, I’m moving on and realizing that it happens sometimes, we bite off more than we can chew, injuries crop up and sometimes it’s best to quit while you’re ahead. The ride was incredibly beautiful but also incredibly LONGER than originally planned. Mr. Pi, my stud, finished the ride and ended up with 99.5 miles, yup, he rode a century.
Very pretty scenery but very hilly!

Speaking of century’s, I’m not sure what this means for my planned century in August. I’m going to reevaluate after my doctors appt and figure out the best plan. If my foot is not broken and I can get in a ride of at least 80 miles (which would have to happen the weekend of August 6-7) then I might go for it but at this stage it is looking like I will be downgrading to the metric century or maybe even the 40 mile option. Since it is not fair to subject poor Mr. Pi to riding an entire century with someone much slower (and at times whiney and just not fun to be around), if I do ride the century I’ll be on my own. I’ll keep ya posted but my hopes to ride the century might be put off for a year.

-July 23rd, MY BIRTHDAY

I’m officially in the last year of my 20’s and I celebrated in style with lots of friends, food and fun. Mr. Pi’s birthday is in 12 days so we hosted a smashing backyard BBQ on Saturday to celebrate both of our birthdays. I’m totally lame and didn’t take any pictures, I know I suck. It was an awesome gathering and I really appreciate everyone who made it. I felt incredibly loved and spoiled!  I can't believe I don't have any photos!  Not even of my birthday cake!

Three Things Thursday

1. Vacation is awesome, returning to work and getting caught up is not. This week has been a lot of playing catch up, at work and at home. I am exhausted.

2. Injuries are really terrible. My foot is still bothering me (yes, even after the cortisone shot!) and my knee is still a little twingy. I’m ready to feel healthy again!

3. Loving my backyard lately, the grape vine is going nuts, the garden is lush and full and blueberries are even starting to ripen!

Vacation Part II

I left off regaling our long rides and pool time spent in the HOT heat of the valley. After a nice relaxing morning the day after our 65 mile ride we packed up and headed to the city by the bay, leaving our bikes and Zoey behind for their own respite at my Dad’s house (thanks Dad!). We got to SF and were treated to sunny skies (not always the case in the summer, it is often foggy).
driving over the bay bridge

city skyline from the bridge

We had enough time to take a quick nap, snap a photo or two from our hotel home (nice view isn’t it? That's the view you get from Nob Hill)

and then we were huffing it on the streets of SF to AT&T park home of the GIANTS for our first game. I LOVE baseball!

I wish Portland had professional baseball instead of soccer (me no likely soccer). Here are some shots from the game. YAY, they won!

Brian Wilson warming up!  Fear the BEARD!

Yay they won!

On Friday morning, we got to sleep in (for us) and get ready for our runs. Mr. Pi was running 16 miles and had an awesome route + map that RoadBunner so graciously sent him. I really wanted to run over the GGB but knew that with my scaled back running due to my foot injury and the fact that my knee was still sore from our LONG bike ride that I wasn’t going to be able to do a 16 miler to get up and over the bridge and back. So, RoadBunner picked me up at the hotel, which was AWESOME and we drove closer to the bridge.

We did a fun walk/run over the bridge for a little over 4 miles. For not having run in over a week with a sore foot and knee I’d call that a success!  Running over the bridge and reading Aron's course preview has made me consider running the SFM someday!

We made it to the other side!

After running we picked up Mr. Pi at the hotel and headed out for Ramen. This isn’t your college ramen, this stuff is DELICIOUS! Perfect for after a chilly-ish run. After food we played tourists with Roadbunner as our tour guide, it was awesome! We went through Golden Gate Park (so pretty)
pretty wildflowers

Bison, who knew?

and up to the lookout at Twin Peaks (I’d never been up there before).

It was a great afternoon of site seeing! Thanks so much Roadbunner great to see you and hang out for a bit.

After we got back to the hotel, again we had a little time to rest before heading out for pre-game pizza and beer. In college, Mr. Pi and his good friend J would go to this little hole in the wall place for pizza and beers before the game. They give you a slice of pizza + 32 oz of beer for $12. I’ve been to this place with them before and remember leaving VERY tipsy. We ventured there and got our pizza and beer.

Chug-a-lug

I was so proud of myself, I finished ¾ of my beer—go me! Again, leaving there very tipsy. Good thing the walk to the park was only a few blocks. We hunkered down into our seats and got ready for game #2! Again, I LOVE baseball! Sadly, they didn’t win this one but it was still a good game.

Saturday morning we had a leisurely morning of walking to breakfast and back. We both kept thinking how strong our butts and quads would be if we lived in SF walking up and down all the hills.
this photo doesn't even do this street justice--straight up and up and up

Sadly, we had come to the end of our mini-vacation within our vacation. We headed back to the valley heat where we picked up the dog (and our bikes) and spent the evening up North with Mr. Pi’s family.

Sunday came our long drive home where we even picked up a stow-away! We have our 17 year old nephew with us for the week. I hope the weather in Portland cooperates and lets us take him on some fun adventures.

Sadly, vacation is over and it’s back to the grind. Here is one last cheers to a great vacation with lots of time spent with family, friends and getting in our miles!

Vacation Part I

Hello form sunny HOT California.  So far, vacation has been great (when is vacation ever not great?).  We've been busy enjoying ourselves and getting some quality workouts in as well.

Sunday we embarked on an EARLY long ride.  We had 50 on the schedule but found a ride that was closer to 58 miles and set out ready to take on the day.  We started the ride at 7:00 am and it was already warm.  I'm the first to say I love the heat, I really dislike being cold while exercising however, starting a ride at 7:00 am where it is already mid-80's was a little much--even for me.  Around mile 20ish we were cruising along at a 16.6 MPH avg pace and I felt great. It was just us and the farmlands and the birds (actually we saw TWO snakes as well, ick, I was glad we went by them quickly).

Happy Blissful photo

About mile 25 is where the blissfulness ended.  I got a flat. Yes, again!
Grrr tire changing.  I let Mr. Pi tackle it as I figure he could change it faster than I could!

Then, we got the tire back on and there was a lump in it that made it feel like a mini speed bump.  All of this sent me into a horrible frustrated funk.  Couple that with a headwind on the way back and I wasn't fun to be around (sorry Mr. Pi, thanks for putting up with me).  Given the tire issue and the fact that our pace had dropped significantly we opted to head back to the car which off significant mileage and we ended the ride at 14.2 avg pace and 44 miles.

July 4th came and went and we didn't see or hear any fireworks!  We also didn't BBQ we had Chinese take out and man, it was good.  We spent the day helping Mr. Pi's parents finish their shed.
I helped finish painting and helped Mr. Pi with the roofing (but he did 99.9% of it with his Mom also hammering in sections).  This shed has been in process since my last trip down in May.  Each of Mr. Pi's siblings (there are 5 Pi children in total) has helped with a section of the shed.

July 5th was a new day and I was ready to get back on the saddle again.  Mr. Pi and I drove to Chico and he ran in Bidwell Park and I rode loops. The park is closed to traffic so I put in one headphone, which I do think pepped my pace.  I did 15 miles in 1:02.

It was really HOT so I decided to go for a swim in what is called "1 mile."  It's basically a damed off swimming hole feed by a creek.  It was kind of quasi-open water swimming since it's not a pool, the whole thing is pretty long and you have to sight to make sure you're going in a straight line.  After about 40 minutes of swimming I found a spot on the grass to relax and wait for Mr. Pi.  I was happy to finish a confidence building workout and was ready to tackle our LONG ride.

"1 mile" is in the background

After heading down to Sacramento, we had a great BBQ with my Dad and stepmom (see we had our BBQ just a day late.  We all went to bed early as our alarms were set for 5:00am.  By 6:30am the next morning we were off on our 65 mile ride.  My dad on his MOUNTAIN bike and Mr. Pi and I on our road bikes.  My Dad is amazing!  We both drafted off Mr. Pi pretty much the whole time but my Dad made it 52 miles on his MOUNTAIN bike!  Wow!
Goofy looking picture of us.  But in the background is the American River, it looked very full and very fast moving.
Our shadows

My favorite two studs!

Mr. Pi and I finished up ourselves and hit the car at exactly 65 miles in 4:19 for an avg of 15 MPH.  This is HUGE for me.  I've never gone that far keeping a pace like that.  My right knee is paying the price right now but a couple of hours later, I got my POOL time complete with a raft to float on and a beer.

Tomorrow we head to San Francisco for a two-day anniversary/birthday celebration.  I can't wait! Let's go Giants, let's go!

Feet + July Goals

I finally went to the podiatrist about my foot. I figure I started complaining about it more than a month ago it was time.  Turns out I was right, Morton's Neuroma.  Bummer!  I got fitted for some sexy orthotics (which aren't really that comfortable), got a list of stretches I'm supposed to do twice a day and a cortisone shot.

Now, going into the Doc appt I was hoping for some type of pain med, a shot, pills, something BUT I forgot cortisone shots are painful!  Ouch.  The rest of the day I limped around with a swollen, slightly numb foot.  I was also told no running for a week and then ease back into it.

Gah, oh well, temporary set back but I wasn't doing much running anyway since it was so painful.  Hopefully this will make the pain go away and I'm hopeful I can still get in a walk/run (short one) with RoadBunner in SF next Friday, that's over a week from now so I should be okay for 3 miles.  Please internet friends stalk me on twitter and facebook and via email to do my stretches and wear my awesome orthotics.  I've got an Olympic Tri in 32 days and other things I want to do this fall.  Doc has okay'd biking and swimming as great cross training exercises as I ease back into the running game.

Alright enough on feet, let's get to July goals.

Dude, it's July already!?!?!
7 goals for the 7th month of the year, ready, set, go...

1. Blog layout.  Yup, still on here and maybe will get done while I'm on vacation.

2. Ride an early morning ride BEFORE work and bike commute to the office at the end of my ride.

3.  Do a double day bike of 15-20 miles in the AM and 15-30 in the PM.  (Gotta get ready for the crazy century ride in August.)

4.  Have an awesome, laid back, summery birthday BBQ to celebrate my last year of my 20's and Mr. Pi's first year of his 30's.  I need to send this evite out.  (Waiting for Mr. Pi's list of invitees-ahem).  I already picked out the most awesome (read slightly cheesy decorations from the dollar store, it's going to be awesome.)

5.  I had a goal to get my long run up to 10 miles but I'm going to pare that goal back a bit and set it at 7 since I'll be outta running commission for the first few days of the month and then easing back into the swing of things.

6.  Do AT least 2 early morning workouts per week.  I have no problem it seems getting up on Friday's to go do my spin + brick, why can't I get up on other days?  (Anyone want to be my texting buddy at o'dark thirty?)

7.  Design BOTH the patio (or deck extension) and terrace.  I think we should be able to at least design them this month.  Sheesh it's not as hard as actually finishing the projects.
