Giving Thanks for a great Week 9 Goofy Training

Thanksgiving is my most favorite holiday, besides my birthday of course.  Seriously, who doesn't love a holiday about FOOD?!

My week was full of lots of good things to be thankful for most importantly my wonderful husband Mr. Pi who supports my decisions and is just the best ever!  I also have pretty wonderful friends here in P-town, several of whom I got to spend Thanksgiving with, yay.

Here are some photos of the feast:

On Saturday, Mr. Pi and I went out to get our Christmas tree!

I love this photo!

Once we got home, I blasted the Christmas music and got to work decorating the tree and getting the house decked out in Christmas cheer.  Turns out we don't have many ornaments so I decided to put race medals from 2010 on the tree as well.

Week 8 Goofy Training

Week 8 was a step back week and I think my legs needed it.  I only did three runs for 24.1 miles.  I really don't have a lot to report on running BUT I did have an amazing weekend.

Mr. Pi and I did a quick weekend trip down to California for some wine tasting and family time.  While we were there I got to meet my nieces new puppy Macy...isn't she a cutie?  She's a puggle--beagle/pug.

Here are some fun pictures from the weekend:
The Hipstamatic App is my new best friend, enjoy the fun photos.

 Pretty vines!
Awww!

Cold here in Portland this week.  Today the high was only 30! BRRRRRRR!  I got in a short 4.5 miler in the cold sunshine.  If it has to be winter, I LOVE sunshine and COLD.

I'm really excited about Thanksgiving and getting to host in our very own house!  I'm also beyond excited about getting a Christmas tree and decorating the house this coming weekend.  I'll check in with my holiday goals this week but so far I'm doing pretty well.

Week 7 Goofy Training

Week 7 of Goofy training got me thinking that "goofy" should really be called something else.  More like the "are you out of your mind" challenge.  Anyway, keeping with a Disney theme, I think I may have experienced all the emotions of the seven dwarfs this week!

Sneezy--Yup attack of the sneezes happened last Monday and I kept praying "please don't get sick, please don't get sick" so far so good.

Sleepy--Definitely sleepy on multiple occasions, most notably after my crazy hard 8x400 workout on Thursday!  Whew that one left me wiped OUT.

Dopey--Mid-way through my long run on Sunday I was feeling quite dopey, why did I only take one Gu for a 15 mile run?  I think I need to re-take fueling for long runs 101.

Doc--I used the WebMD app on my phone a couple times this week.

Happy--Sunday Brunch with an amazing HUSBAND, an amazing Monte Cristo sandwich and coffee-nothing could have made me happier.

Bashful--Who am I kidding, I am rarely bashful!

Grumpy--I was not only dopey but also grumpy on my long run.  When do I get to have a GREAT long run again? (This weekend right?!!!!!)  My legs were tired and my heart rate was all over the place.  I'd get going and was feeling good and then my heart would start beating uberfast.  Hence the "doc" and webMD'ing.  I didn't come to any conclusions other than, it was an off day.  Eh, they happen right?

All in all, 30 miles for the week + 1 strength training session (back to back 30 day shreds ouch) + 1 yoga session (via netflix streaming live).

It happens...Week 6 Goofy

Week 6 of goofy training didn’t go so great.  It happens, right?

I felt tired and heavy all week.  My runs were SLOW and hard and I just didn’t feel right.  Come Friday I was exhausted and felt like I was getting the flu!  I had the chills and the sweats Friday morning but gutted it out until 3:30 at work before throwing in the towel.  Cue a Friday night of going to be bed SUPER early and getting 12+ hours of sleep.   Saturday  morning I woke up feeling MUCH better.  Guess I needed that sleep!

Let’s recap my runs of the week.

Tuesday—intervals via treadmill before election night parties after eating a burrito bowl from chipotle.  Let’s just say, the success here is that I didn’t barf.  Supposed to be 5 miles, only did 4.  (.5 warm up, 4 x 800 w/400 rest intervals, .5 cool down)

Wednesday—A so-so run on a gorgeous fall evening.   I really thought I was cruising and I’d look down and see a 11:30 min mile, it was kinda disheartening.  I promptly changed the screen so all I could see was total time and went along my 5 mile route.  I tried to focus on the crunching leaves under my feet and the pretty blue sky.  It worked well enough to get me through 5 miles but I was BEAT at the end.

Thursday and Friday—I rested.  I needed it.

Saturday—I woke up feeling better and attempted my 7 miler.  I made it 4.5 miles, I’d call it a success.  I pretty much spent the rest of the day lounging around the house.  However, Mr. Pi wanted to do a vertical beer tasting of Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale.  A vertical tasting is tasting the same beer in multiple vintages (i.e. 2004, 2005, 2006...)  He tried 7 years worth of the celebration ale and I tried to take artsy beer photos.

Sunday—Mr. Pi and I ventured out together toward a local paved trail.  He ran the first 2.25 miles with me.  I could tell it was going to be a tough run based on those first couple of miles.  I was already cranky (never a good sign) and my legs already were tired.  Once we parted ways, I started up the 3:1 walk/run ratio.  I knew that was the only way I was going to get through the run.  It worked for awhile until I basically just ran outta energy.  I went down to 1:1 for about 10 minutes and then felt good enough to go to 2:1.  When I got to mile 12, I thought, one more mile, I’ll go back to 3:1.  When I hit mile 13 and I was nowhere close to home I went back to 2:1 until 13.5 and then threw in the towel and walked the rest of the way home.  I ended with 13.7 miles.  My plan only called for 12 and I was aiming for roughly 13.  Let’s just say at mile 13, when I realized I had totally planned the route incorrectly--- I was ready to be DONE and was really really close to cursing out loud on a busy street.  I haven’t been that out of energy on a run in a LONNNNNG time.  I really just lost it.  I kept thinking relentless forward motion.  And sure enough I made it back to the house.

Total Miles: 27.2 (not horrible considering, in fact, only 2.8 miles off what it was supposed to be)

This week I’m going to work on staying positive even if my legs and/or lungs don’t want me to be.  I’ve also got my holiday goals to keep me in check!

Here's a fall photo of our backyard.  The fall colors are amazing, who knew our blueberry bushes would get so pretty.  This picture really doesn't do them justice.

Holiday Goals

Nhershoes posted a holiday goals list.  I thought it was a great idea so I’m copying!  In honor of my first red cup of the season, here is my holiday goal list:

1.  Make November and December 100+ mile months too.  October was a 100+ mile month and with marathon training ramping up I’m sure Nov and Dec will be too but it is still a goal I’d like to hit so I’m putting it on the list. (I don’t think I’m going to hit 1000 miles this year-mostly b/c of the alien water balloon-but maybe I can hit a monthly mileage PR.)

2.  Start my memory quilt.  I have a bunch of old race t-shirts and shirts from college (and before) that I don't wear.  Time to get quilting.

3.  Finish all holiday shopping by Dec. 1st and get crafty with gift giving.  Mr. Pi and I learned how to make jelly for our housewarming party, this inspired me to try to make more homemade gifts.

4.  Run to see Christmas lights!  I love Christmas lights and there is a street not too far from me known for their light displays.  I meant to plan a run there last year but it didn’t happen---it’s happening this year, even if it’s in the rain!

5.  Finish my swim goal for the year.  Goal is 100 miles, I’m 25ish away.  I know it's doable.

6.  Not gain any weight during the holiday season.  With my running peaking it'll take some willpower not to overindulge in all the goodies that the holiday season brings.  This is the second time I've been marathon training through the holidays.  On the one hand, it's great b/c there is usually time off from work which means more time to train but on the other hand, there are always sweets and goodies around that make snack attacks frequent and calorie filled.

7.  Get up early one day a week to strength train, go to spin class, run, swim, anything to get me moving in the morning again.  (This is to start next week.  I'm hoping with the time change happening it'll be easier to peel myself out of bed.)

8.  Read two books before January 1.  I have Book Club book for this month already started but after that I want to finish another before the end of the year.  Suggestions?

9.  Strength training.  Member when I used to go to crazyweights twice a week, yeah, haven't been in FOR-EV-ER!  Get my body pumping iron with strength training at least once a week (starts next week).  I wanna be able to cross off the 10 push ups from my 2010 goals list.

10.  No holiday music until AT LEAST the week of Thanksgiving.  I LOVE holiday music but I'm trying really hard not to listen to any holiday tunes until the week of Thanksgiving.  It's going to be tough, especially since I discovered pandora has like 4 or 5 dedicated holiday music stations!!!!!

Goofy Week 5 + Halloween Extravaganza

 In honor of Halloween:

H-Happy Running (I ran 27.65 miles this week and pretty much loved every minute.  That put October mileage at 108.45.  I haven't run over 100 miles in a month since spring 2009.  Legs are feeling worked but in a good way!)

A-Awesome party thrown by Amy! (Saturday night, Amy and the architect hosted a fab Halloween party complete with spooky themed drinks and a projector showing scary movies. Great job lady!)

L-Long Run  (I did 10 miles on Sunday morning and was treated to bright blue skies and crisp air.  Mr. Pi and I did opposite loops from our house and got to see each other on the trail about halfway through our runs, it was awesome.  It was one of those mornings when I wished (at least for a moment) that I was running longer since it was perfect running weather.)

L-Legs (I FINALLY did a strength circuit on Tuesday evening and wowie, it’s been awhile.  My legs were SORE!  My abs were also nice and sore.  I foresee more 30-day shred videos in my future.)

O-Ow! (My foot is still suffering from the Morton’s Neuroma issue.  Totally annoying.  I haven’t been wear heels!  It may just be one of those things I have to deal with, which, in the grand scheme of dealing with issues, this one isn’t too bad.)

W- Win (That's right, Giants won Game 4 and are up 3-1 in the World Series. Game 5 tonight---GOOOOOOO GIANTS!)

E- Elections  (I turned in my ballot last week---how about you?  PS I'm ready for campaign commercials to go away.)

E-Even Splits (For my long run, I tried to work on even pacing instead of slowing down at the end like normal.  I did a .9 run/.1 walk ratio and tried to keep the running right around 11-11:30 min miles.  I mostly succeeded, there were some miles below 11 and a couple well above 11, namely mile 8 which involves a 1/2 mile pretty steep grade hill.  I ended my 10 mile long run with the walk/run strategy at just over 2 hours, which means, I was just over a 12 min mile which is about right with walk/running.  Eventually, I’d like my long runs to be closer to 11:30 but for now, I’ll take 12.)

N-November (seriously?!?! It's November already.  My favorite holiday is approaching--Thanksgiving---yummmmmmmm!)

I'll leave you with some photos from the week!
