Monday, Monday

One great thing about Monday--I don't have to worry about when I'm going to fit in a workout as Monday is rest day.

Running mojo returned Sunday--hooray! The group started out on the Springwater path and there was a mini crisis---hopefully she'll tell the story in her words. I was glad I had my shuffle so I could crank up my tunes. Unfortunately for me I put the tunes on and realized that crap, my computer only loaded 3 songs! That's right, I had almost 2 hours of running with only 3 songs. Needless to say I don't want to hear those three songs for a good long while. The whole run my legs felt good. Wish I had taken pictures, it was sunny and warm. I took my arm sleeves off about half way through and was running in a tank top and capris--it was lovely. Ended the run 10.5 miles/1:57/11:08 avg---I'll take it!

Thursday's weights class made me so sore that I took Friday completely off. By Saturday, I was still super sore (especially my butt from all the squats and lunges) but I still got on my bike and rode 25 miles! It was a nice ride, warmish, it was the first time in a long time that I wasn't cold during my whole ride. I also rode faster than the 25 miles I did the weekend before. 25 mi/2:02/15 MPH

I have some fun runs coming up this week, hopefully my running mojo will be back for good after this week! Two weeks before I start my official Barb's race training. I feel like I have a good base going into training but I'm also scared about fitting everything in.

All in all, I ended February with more running miles than January so I'm on track for that mini goal.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Tagged--6 random (really random) things

I haven't been tagged in awhile so thanks to AJH at Age Group Rocks for tagging me with the Goregous Blogger Award!

For the Gorgeous Blogger Award I'm supposed to list 6 things about myself. I'm going to see if I can make this 6 very random, hopefully not already discussed on this blog, things about me.

1. Right now I'm obsessed with soda water. I was getting sick of drinking plain water and discovered in the cafeteria at work I can get soda water out of the fountain along with plain water. Mmmmmm fizz!

2. I pack my workout/morning bag in the same order every night. I often, usually at least 3 times a week, get ready for work at the gym. Here is what my bag looks like, from bottom to top: Hair dryer and make up bag, shoes, pants, "unmentionables," top, jewelry bag. My shower shoes, hair brush, shampoo, etc are already in a pocket in my bag so I don't have to pack them every day.

3. I'm messy. I really wish I wasn't and I didn't use to be. I have piles of clothes in my closest, sometimes in the bathroom which annoys Mr. Pi rightfully so (reason #109759349573947 that when we buy a house, two bathrooms minimum!). My work desk is insanely overcrowded, which bothers me beyond belief but everytime I clean it up piles accumulate. My desk at home is my dumping ground for stuff when I come home from work. I keep hoping that when we have a house and more space, things won't be so clutter and items will have their places. I always love when people come over because it forces me to put everything away (of course, it just accumulates again).

4. At 3pm everyday, I want (sometimes NEED) sugar. It's the weirdest thing. I don't usually indulge my craving but it's almost always there. Only during the work week too.

5. I'm starting Toastmasters to work on my meeting facilitation and public speaking skills. I actually think I'm decent at giving presentations but I certainly could work on meeting facilitation (i.e. running a meeting).

6. I have four pages of apps on my iPhone but use maybe 4 apps regularly and the others just sit there.

I tag the following 6 people...be tagged if you'd like to be and not if you don't.

PS Did my first lunch time swim today. Can't say it was the most relaxing lunch hour of my life but I busted out 2000 yds in 42 minutes and was back at my desk within an hour and 15 minutes of leaving it. (Hope you had a good swim too Runner Leana.)
PPS Weights class in the AM + lunch swim = TIRED arms.

Getting out of a Slump---ideas?!?!

Behind on blogs and posting---I have been getting through my backlogged reader but not commenting a whole lot---sorry guys. I even got tagged by AJH at Age Group Rocks, I’ll be posting the tag tomorrow.

Anyway, before I tell you about my weekend of workouts, I gotta pause and shout out a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my awesome running buddy Amy. Happy Birthday---hope you had a great trail run and bloody mary’s this morning!

Last week, I didn’t run as much, in fact my running has been lack luster lately, more on this in a minute but I did have a great bike ride and awesome swim.

Saturday, I went to the swim workout with my new tri club and found out they were going to do the second half of the workout as a swim meet. I haven’t dove off blocks or competed in any swim events (besides two tri swims) since high school! I signed up for pretty much every event they were going to be holding (which meant I was probably going to be doing a couple back to back). After a good warm up we started the “meet.” My goal was to not come in last in any of my heats---success! I won my heat of the 200 free, came in second in the 50 free (surprising since I did the 200 free and 50 free back-to-back). I was mid-pack in the backstroke (both the 100 and 200) and mid-pack in the 100 IM. I can't believe I did a whole 25 of fly without wanting to die. I usually just do one arm fly. I did two breast events, 100 and 50—these were my weakest events, second to last in both. Not that surprising since breast is my weakest stroke.

After swimming, I felt great! The sun was shining so I got on my bike for a ride. Mr. Pi, me and two other friends headed out on the Springwater Trail. It was a gorgeous day albeit a little cold and a LOT windy. One of our friends was on a mountain bike so we kept the pace easy on the way out, not to mention there was a headwind! On the way back our friend told us to just go on and he’d catch up. Definitely hit a negative spilt. First half avg 11.5 MPH, second half avg 16 MPH, total 25.5 miles/12.5 MPH. I’ll take it! Best thing about this ride, I felt like I could keep going and going and going. I’m loving that 25 miles is no biggy anymore. Wish I had taken pictures---sorry guys I suck.

Sunday was our long run. The group met out at the Banks-Vernonia Trail and again we were treated to beautiful sunny skies. However, like I said, I just haven’t been feeling my runs. It’s almost like my endurance has gotten worse not better. Every time I run I feel labored, tired and my legs feel so heavy! WTF?!?! I decided not to push it and turned out at 4 miles with Sarah. We had a leisurely run back to the parking lot followed by a riveting game of Apples to Apples with the other shorter distance runners. Amy, Mr. Pi and Jenn pulled in the long numbers for the week and all finished strong. I’m not going to stress out about running but I am somewhat annoyed about how I’ve been feeling. It’s like I’ve lost my motivation for running. I’ve also been really intimidated by hills, which is unfortunate because I work and live near hills. Hmmmm, how to get out of the slump!?!?

One idea to get out of the slump is to do a course preview. After reading all of Danica’s awesome posts on the LA Marathon, I was thinking of doing a course preview of my half marathon coming up in April. My best friend Kristen (who is taking the California Bar exam as I type) is coming up for this race and Penny was considering flying up too. I’ve run the race before so I kinda already know the course but I thought it’d be fun to show it off for Kristen (and anyone else considering running it). I definitely need something!

Another idea is to try to run at least one mile farther every month this year. I set the bar pretty low with January mileage 75.78 miles. This might be a fun and motivating goal.

Other ideas for getting out of a running slump...send them my way pretty please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stats for last week:
Running: 16.8 miles--pathetic really
Biking: 32 miles (25.5 outside in the glorious sunshine)
Swimming: 3950 yards (an approximation, since I'm not sure how many yards I actually swam during the swim meet)
Weights: 30 minute circuit at home, no weights class

Getting through this week

I haven’t been so excited for a Friday in awhile. It was been quite the week at work, two 10 hour days back to back. I couldn’t force myself to get up for weights class either Tuesday or Thursday since my usual weights partner is sick—so weights was a MAJOR fail this week. I did manage 30 minutes at home last night during the Olympics but it’s not the same as crazyweights instructor C yelling to push out 10 more reps. I also skipped my Wednesday run to allow my huge foot blister a chance to heal up. I definitely think skipping the run helped—blister is feeling much better today despite two full days of being on my feet at work.

My stomach issues were better this week, thank goodness. I think it helped that I was really tracking my food closely and trying hard to be more balanced, instead of relying so much on carbs. Speaking of carbs, my wonderful Mr. Pi made the best bread yesterday, I should have taken a photo before I cut it! I gladly served myself a couple of slices of the rustic, crusty bread along with my salad and fried egg last night. Thanks honey!

I have 3 more weeks before I transition into my 20 week Barb’s Race training plan. I keep thinking it’s still so far away but really I need to start ramping up—mostly the biking. I think I’m going strong on the swimming and running front. I am really going to need to find creative ways to fit in midweek rides. I’m excited that the days are getting longer because biking in the dark is scary. I'm probably still going to be on the trainer for a little while longer for midweek rides so, anyone have good suggestions on trainer ride workouts? I have really been just pounding out time on the trainer without working on anything specific. I know a few people have mentioned intervals—what gear do you do intervals in?

On a totally unrelated last note, it has been a gorgeous week here in p-town. Sunny since Tuesday and warmish (I still think anything below 75 is chilly) but 58-60 in Oregon for February---I'll take it! I'm really looking forward to both my ride and run this weekend. Something about the sunshine makes everything seems just that much better.

Valentine's Day Dinner-YUM

Where to begin?

I guess I’ll start with an update on my stomach issues. I’ve been tracking with www.thedailyplate.com for one week and will continue to track this week too. I think my issues were coming from an unbalanced diet. Unbalanced diet coupled with stress. I’m sure my body will get back on track this week!

My workout week was kinda up and down. But at the end of the week, I got in:
27.2 miles of running
4700 yards of swimming
One pathetic trainer ride 1:15/~17 miles
2 hours of weights class

So I don’t bore you with the full recap I’ll just stick to the weekend recap of workouts and my awesome Valentine’s dinner with Mr. Pi.

Saturday I got up EARLY and headed to the opposite side of town for a swim workout with the tri club I joined. I haven’t been to a coached swim practice in ages so I had no idea what to expect. I opted for a lane in the middle of pool but was quickly moved to a faster lane. The workout was great and everyone was so nice. I’m really glad that I decided to join this group. I kinda lost count of yards but I do vividly remember the 3 x 300 pull (with alternating fast 100)—phew my arms were jello at the end of that set. I think we did about 2500-2600 in 1:30—which is slower than I normally swim on my own but we did a ton of drills and so awesome stretches in the middle of the workout. I really enjoyed myself!

When I got home I did 1:15/~17 miles on the trainer. I thought it was going to rain otherwise I would have ridden outside.

Sunday running group kinda disbanded for the week but I met up with Amy late morning for 12 miles on Sauvie Island. I thought it was going to be a miserable run in the rain but the rain held off and I actually ended up in short sleeves! I started out in my Zensah sleeves but got hot and rolled them down. Thanks to Kristen for my awesome Christmas present.
Sunday night was Valentine’s for the Pi household. We’re not huge celebrators of Valentine’s Day but we do have one tradition---we cook for each other every other year. This year was Mr. Pi’s year to cook for me, which meant I got to sit on the couch and be spoiled. Last year, I failed at taking pictures of the meal I made so this year I took lots…mmmmm…
The table. Yes, those are still the same flowers from 2 weeks ago!Champagne poured.Greek tomato salad--mmmmm!Pork medallions with apple and cream gravy---double mmmmm!Super tasty mashed root vegetables with bacon.Cheers to our 6th Valentine's Day dinner. And, who could forget dessert?!?! Every year we make a different trifle--this is raspberry, mocha trifle---delicious!!!!

Awesome Tri Top & Muddy Run

Remember that post I did on things I covet? Well, I ended up ordering the Sugoi RSR Tri Top. I’ve worn it three times. The first time for a short 3 mile run (under two other layers) and it didn’t ride. The second time on a trainer ride and it didn’t ride. The third time for a 90 minute spin class followed by a brick run and it didn’t ride. Notice a theme, it didn’t ride! I think I have found my new tri/duathlon racing top. It’s LONG, it’s tight but not so tight that I feel like a sausage, and the pockets are awesome (there are two, one bike jersey style open pocket and one zipper pocket). The material is not slick like my other tri top but kinda dimple-y, if that makes any sense. I think the dimples help it not to ride on my slick shorts. Now is the time to start looking for new tri clothes for the upcoming season, if you need a new top I HIGHLY recommend the Sugoi RSR Tri Top! HUGE thumbs up for this top.

I really need to get some good pics with me in this top. I'll work on that.

In other news, I had a great run with Jen on Wednesday. I took a mental health day off from work, I needed it. Jen and I met up and headed to Forest Park. We ran at our own paces since she was doing 9 miles and I only wanted to do 6-7. I ended with...6.5 miles/1:09/10:42..and probably a pound of mud on my shoes and capris.

Jen got muddy too! And she was a crazy person in SHORTS!

Yay we're done.

The rest of the week has been ho-hum. I've been having really bad stomach cramps, not the once a month kind either. I've been tracking my food on http://www.thedailyplate.com/ and I think it might be what I'm eating. I'm going to work next week on tweaking my diet to see if that helps with my tummy issues.

Ups and Downs

I had an up and down week emotionally last week. It certainly made for some strong workouts but my eating habits suffered. This week I’m going to go back to tracking my food at www.thedailyplate.com and working on eating more intuitively instead of because it’s “time to eat” or “I’m bored.”

Monday: PM Trainer Ride and Pushup Challenge
I’ve already talked about this ride but just to reiterate it was awesome! 45 minutes/14 miles

Tuesday: PM Terwilliger run with Amy
I skipped weights class in favor of sleeping in but I had a great run with Amy on Terwilliger, maybe the fastest Terwilliger run yet. 4.2 mi/43:52/10:26 AP

Wednesday: AM Swim/PM Run
Great swim on Wednesday morning. It was one of those times I felt like I could go forever. 2700 yds/1:00:46

I did my 5 mile run solo on the treadmill Wednesday. I ran mostly at an easy pace but kicked up the pace a few times, I did a couple of 800’s at a 9:30-45 pace and one 1600 at 9:22. So a bit of a tempo run in the middle of the 5 but mostly easy. 5 mi/54:00/10:48 AP

Thursday: AM Weights
I skipped my Thursday trainer ride but weights class was great. I up’d my weight on the barbell and also used my medium-heavy hand weights pretty much the whole class. I can definitely tell I’m getting stronger.

Friday: Rest

Since I worked hard Monday and I got stuck at work until after 6:00 pm on Friday, I took the day off.

Saturday: AM 90 min Spin/4.5 mi Brick Run
I ventured out on Saturday morning to meet up with a local tri club. I’d received a ton of really nice emails and was excited to give their workout a try. I got there early and mingled a bit, found a bike and settled in for the 90 minute spin session. The group leader was amazing! So encouraging and really focused on finding your “zone.” He was a little cheesy but in a good way!

The run. I was told that there was going to be two groups, a 3 mile group and a 6 mile group. I opted for 3 since this was my first brick run in 6 months. I actually felt great. I hit the first two miles at about a 9:45/50 which is wayyyyy faster than my actual tri race running pace---there is hope that my running will improve. The group was mostly faster than me but there was one lady who I ran with for part of the time. She was amazing. 60 years old and totally kicking butt! At 2 miles we reached a track and were told one mile at the track. Okay, no problem. My mile was 10:01 and my average after three miles was about a 9:50—I was super proud of myself however, also wondering where the heck we were and how far it was to get back! I had only signed up for 3 miles. It was 1.5 miles to get back and they were a struggle since I wasn’t anticipating having to go any farther but I finished strong and feeling accomplished. I slowed down on the last 1.5 miles to a 10:30/40 (still faster than my tri race pace). I ended with about 10:15 avg and was the last person of the group to finish but I gotta tell ya, everyone was so nice, they all waited for me so that we could cross the final street together. I decided I am soooooo joining this group!

Sunday: AM Run
My legs were heavy and I was kinda hungover from Mr. Pi’s Beer School Party the day before but I got through 8.7 miles with Sarah. We walked some, we ran some, we chatted lots. Our Sunday group keeps growing which is awesome. I even saw a couple of my tri club friends from the day before out on the trail running. 8.7 miles/1:42/11:43 AP

Life After Barb's Race

It has been a WEEK. Bad news came on Monday which just furthers my thoughts about career contemplations. The news on Monday gave me motivation to have a booty busting trainer ride. I usually take Monday's off but I need an outlet so I rode my little heart out on the trainer and did some push ups! I've also been thinking a lot this week about the future in general, not just career-wise but also training-wise.

I haven’t even officially started my training plan for Barb’s race and my mind is already thinking ahead to August 1st, 2010 (i.e. the day after Barb’s race). I said I wouldn’t think about races until after Barb’s but here I am thinking away. (Wonder if I'm the only person with this "problem?") I’m not committing to anything until after Barb’s (unless any races are close to being full) but I have a few ideas. One is contingent on the Dunlap family vacation of 2011 and the others are all going to be based on my thoughts after Barb’s. Deep breath…here is what’s on the MAYBE list:

Foxy’s Fall Century Ride Davis, Ca—October 2010 (Kristen, my BFF, has done the shorter distances and is thinking about doing the century. If I’m not totally over cycling after Barb’s race I will consider this event. I know Mr. Pi wants to do a century this year. I also thought that maybe my Dad might consider biking one of the distances at this event.)

CIM Sacramento, Ca—December 2010 (There I said it. I am CONSIDERING another marathon. It’s my hometown marathon and everyone seems to love it so, it’s on the maybe list. Free place to stay, lots of family support and transportation to/from the race also help make this marathon one to seriously consider.)

Goofy Challenge Orlando, FL—January 2011 (Yup, as if one marathon wasn’t enough to consider. This is the race that’s contingent upon the Dunlap family vacation. If they go to Florida in January, Mr. Pi and I are doing Goofy. Holy cow, did I just say that I WANT to run a half marathon and a marathon all in one weekend? Oh yeah and I told any of the family members that I'd run the family 5k with them. So, 5k, 1/2 marathon and marathon in 3 days---am I CRAZY?!?! Probably.)

Do any of you get ahead of yourselves in planning races? How many of you have an “A” race but still plan other races after? Is it good to keep thinking ahead or distracting?

Your Questions, My Answers

Finally, my Q&A post. Answers to your questions. Enjoy!

Q: How do you fuel for a training run or ride? Do you have a strength or stretching routing? How do you like to balance all the types of fitness routines you do?

A: Fueling.
My fueling techniques have changed over time. I started out drinking Gatorade, no Gu, no bloks, no food of any kind. Then Gatorade started to bother my stomach so I switched to water and Gu. After much trial and error, I finally found two Gu flavors that I actually like, Vanilla Bean and Espresso Love. I would normally take them every 4-5 miles and sip on my water every mile, mile and a half. Most recently, I discovered Cliff Shot Bloks and have been testing those out on runs. I haven’t done anything over 10 miles in awhile so I can’t say if they will work for really LONG runs or not. For now, I’ve been taking a block every 2-3 miles and sipping on my water—so far so good.

On the bike, I’m still in process of trying new stuff. I feel like I crave more substantive food than just Gu or bloks while I’m riding. I just put a Bento box on my bike and plan to test out granola bars/power bars on my next few rides. I am still learning how much fluid I need on the bike too. I tried Perpetuem on my last ride and really didn’t like the taste until about half way through the ride, then it tasted like ice cream. Weird, I know.

A: Strength training.
I’ve been much better about strength training the last few months. I go to one, usually two, weights classes a week at my gym (24SET and 24LIFT). I have a hard time doing weights on my own so, going to class helps me fit in a good weights workout. If you’re looking for a routine to do at home, I highly recommend Jillian Michael’s 30-day Shred DVD. For a 20 minute workout it’s surprisingly sweat inducing.

A: Stretching.
Uh, this is a MAJOR weakness for me. I went through a yoga phase for awhile but since then (like a year ago) I haven’t been good about stretching. I try to stretch a little bit after any exercise but sometimes it just doesn’t happen. Bad!

A: Balancing all my activities.
This is tricky. Since this is my first time training for a long distance triathlon I’m not really sure how it’s going to go. I’m in the “base” period right now where I’m still allowing myself plenty of flexibility since come March, I’ll be on a more regimented schedule. I’m enjoying trying new classes like Zumba while still trying to fit in swims, bikes, runs and weights. I went “rogue” for awhile after the San Diego marathon because I’d been on a schedule for too long and needed a break but, in general, I’d rather be on a schedule. I like to know that on Wednesday I’m going to do X and Thursday Y. I’m not a spontaneous person by nature and I prefer being on a schedule. I do think I’ve learned to allow flexibility since at some point because at some point life will get in the way of the schedule.

Q: What do you like best about running in the Portland area? worst?

A: I love that there are so many good places to run in the city and in the surrounding areas. From where I live (as long as you don’t mind a few hills) you can run to two different paved trails, one downtown and one in a park. I also have to say my running buddies are pretty fantastic! I don’t think I’d be half as motivated or excited about running and trying new routes if I didn’t have them. Thanks guys!

I still really hate running in the rain. It is better this year than last year probably because I have better rain gear but I still dislike being wet from head to toe. I also find it difficult to fit in running this time of year because there are such limited daylight hours being as far north as Portland is however, I have a good headlamp and running buddies (see a theme) that will tough it out with me.

Q: Favorite local races?

A: I’ve had a few inquires about local races. I must caveat that I’ve really only done three running races in Oregon (one in Eugene and two in Portland). I’ve done two triathlons (both near Portland) but I won’t say anything about them other than I liked them both.
Portland Running: I really enjoyed Race for the Roses ½ marathon (there is also a 5k and this year a 10k too). Race of the Roses is held in April. The race goes through downtown and around the Pearl district/NW (one of my fave areas of Portland). There is really only one hill near the beginning, though there is a bridge on ramp at the end that is brief but killer since it’s at the end. Another great thing about the race is its spectator friendly. Mr. Pi was able to see me off at the start, meet me at mile 5-6ish, see me again around mile 10 and then at the finish line. There is one boring stretch that every longer race in Portland (except Shamrock) runs through in the NW industrial area BUT it’s flat as a pancake. I may have good memories of this race because the weather was PERFECT (little chilly but SUNNY) and because this course still holds my PR (thanks to Julianne). I must say the race medal was cheesy but the race shirt (a snug fitting, in a good way) tech tee was a plus.

I also ran the Shamrock Run in March. I ran the 15k but there is also an 8k and 5k option. I’m not sure if it is was the horrendous weather (rain and wind) or if it was because the race (the 15k) was pretty much uphill for the first 5ish miles but I didn’t really like it. I run on Terwilliger (the hilliest portion of the race route) about once a week now and don’t find it all that bad anymore but I don’t think I’ll ever do the Shamrock 15k again. I didn’t feel like there were enough water stations and it was not a very spectator friendly course.

Eugene Running: This fall I ran the EWEB Run to Stay Warm ½ marathon. It was a great course (much of it followed the Eugene marathon course), it’s flat and scenic along the McKenzie river. It was a small race so I was running alone for much of the race. It was a relatively cheap race but that also means no shirt included and not a ton of course support. I would run this race again but it is a bit of a drive from Portland (2 hours). The late start (9:30) helped make the morning commute not too painful and Eugene has a great beer and sandwich shop called “The Bier Stein” that is worth sticking around for lunch.

Other Portland races that I’ve heard good things about but haven’t personally run:
Portland Marathon and this year Inaugural Half Marathon (early October); Run Like Hell 5k and Half Marathon (late October); Bridge to Brews 10k (April); Pints to Pasta 10k (spring?); Hood to Coast Relay (summer)—I really want to do this race sometime!; Helvetia Half Marathon (June); Destination Races is putting on an inaugural Oregon Wine Country ½ marathon in fall 2010. It definitely looks intriguing. I ran Healdsburg down in CA and enjoyed it.

Q: What kind of bike trainer do you have?

A: Mr. Pi really did all the research on bike trainers so I should have let him do a guest post-answer. At the end of the day, he narrowed it down to the Cycle Ops Fluid and the Kinetic Fluid. Ultimately, we chose the Cycle Ops because we have the trainer set up in our living room and the Kinetic was bright green and the Cycle Ops is gray. We went with the slightly more pricey fluid trainer mostly because we live in an apt and were concerned about sound. (Remember we have a grumpy neighbor.) I also wanted a trainer that I could shift to vary my resistance but I think some magnetic trainers allow shifting too.

Q: Do you like Zumba?

A:
Love Zumba! It’s a crazy combination of dance and aerobics. Every time I’ve been there has been a different instructor so that makes things interesting. If they have Zumba at your gym, try it!

Q: What are your thoughts on RnR races?

A:I’ve done three Rock n Roll marathons, Arizona and San Diego twice. I have nothing to compare these marathons too since I’ve only run in rock n roll marathons. For me, I like big races, especially marathons. Since I’m a back of the pack marathoner, I like to always have people around me and I don’t want the aid stations to run out of water. There were always people around me during all three races, never did I feel alone. The aid stations were always fully stocked and the volunteers still cheerful and spirited. The organization of the expo and race day were excellent.

The course in Arizona was definitely flat as a pancake BUT it was also rather boring. Instead of running through pretty parts of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe you essentially ran past strip mall after strip mall.

Q: What type of music do you listen to when you run?

A: I’m a hip hop girl. Right now, I’ve been diggin’ the Shock Value 2 album by Timbaland, even the collaboration with Milley Cyrus is good. Oddly enough, I also have several songs from the Mamma Mia! Soundtrack on my running playlist right now. Really, I’ll listen to anything with a good beat. I can’t say I listen to lyrics much when I’m running.

Contemplation

Last week didn't get any less stressful. I don’t normally talk about my work on the blog, other than it being stressful at times. I’m kinda reaching a point where I need to decide what I want to do with my future career. Do I want to climb the career latter like I always thought I would or do I just settle for what I have (a decent job that I mostly enjoy but one that I’m overqualified for and underpaid for my degree)? I always thought I would be a career latter person. In fact, for a long time, I didn’t want to get married because I wanted the flexibility to work long hours and do lots of international travel. My international career didn’t happen. I did get married AND I love being married and couldn’t imagine my life without Mr. Pi and, I most certainly DO NOT want to work longer hours. So, do I want to climb the latter or not? I’m still up in the air about it. I’ve made little sticky notes with various careers that have always interested me, some I’m qualified for and others would require going back to school. I know a few other friends going through similar career/life contemplations. Does it ever get easier?!?! Alright, enough career talk.

I took a step back week, last week with two rest days (plus my standard Monday rest), I think it’s what I needed. I’ve also adjusted my race schedule since I made my training plan. My first event of 2010 is going to be a 5k instead of a half marathon. I’ll be doing the Shamrock 5k (March 14) and hoping to chase down my 2002 (or 2003) 5k PR. I haven’t actually run a non-tri related 5k since 2007 and that wasn’t a PR.

I also decided that a sprint tri with a pool swim just isn’t worth it. Instead I’ll be doing a duathlon, a cycling event and only one tri prior to Barb’s race (an oly). Since Barb’s is sort of early in the season, it’s hard to find practice events. There is one other tri I could probably squeeze in but I’m not sure it’s worth it. I think if I stick with my schedule I know I’ll be prepared enough without adding another race.

Despite my rough week and a few days rest I still got in decent weekend workouts.

Saturday I rode the trainer for an hour. Mr. Pi hooked up his Garmin cadence sensor to give me an estimate of my pace/miles. I’m not sure how accurate it was but I ended with 1:00/13 miles. I was pushing but felt pretty good like I could have kept riding. I think it helped that I was watching TV.

I also did a long swim. I’m working through workouts in the Triathletes Swim book. I did an endurance speed set on Saturday, lots of T-pace swimming. I did extend most of the RI’s (rest intervals) but not by much. Swim Stats: 2400/55:45

On Sunday I got in my long run. It wasn’t as fast as I wanted but it was under 12 min/miles which is really all I care about with long runs for the time being. We went to a new place and it was awesome. The route started at the end of PDX aiport, which was kinda cool to see the planes landing. There is a paved path along the Columbia River levy parallel to the aiport. It was flat and scenic. It was foggy when we started and the sun peaked out toward the end of the run! I didn’t run with anyone so I had my tunes blasting, which I haven’t done in a long time. My foot didn’t give me any problems either. My legs on the other hand, felt like led and my stomach wasn’t feeling perfect. I always find it interesting that some days 10:30 feels effortless and other days 11:15 feels super hard. It was one of the latter days. I ended up with 10 miles/1:55/11:31 avg.
